Take the tour with us, and then come to Toyota of North Miami to check out our current selection of Toyota Camry models.

The Early Years

1983 – The Camry arrived on the U.S. market in the 1983 model year. Produced out of the company’s Tsutsumi plant, the goal was to deliver a lightweight, fuel-efficient, and aerodynamic vehicle to auto shoppers on a budget. It ran on a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that generated 92 hp. Other engineering points included MacPherson struts and rack and pinion steering, with front disc and rear drum brakes. For all intents and purposes, this first generation was a thoroughly utilitarian model, seeing few major changes during the first generation but still gaining popularity for its reliability and affordability.

Second Generation

  • 1987 – The Camry received its first major overhaul in 1986 for the 1987 model year. It was the first generation of the Camry to be offered in both sedan and wagon formats, and its 2.0L four-cylinder engine utilized fuel injection and engineering prowess to increase output all the way to 115 hp.
  • 1988 – The biggest addition to the 1988 version of the Camry was the introduction of this model’s very first V6 engine, a 2.5L 24-valve powertrain with dual overhead camshafts. It generated 153 hp which could be sent to a new All-Trac all-wheel drive system.

Third Generation

  • 1992 – When it was redesigned again for the 1992 model year, the Camry first grew into what might be referred to as true midsize dimensions, tailoring itself to the demands of many Miami drivers. The bump in size led to more power, too, with a 2.2L four-cylinder engine that could make 130 hp and a 3.0L V6 that dished out 185 hp. There was also more safety added to the mix with anti-lock brakes and a side airbag on the driver’s side.
  • 1994 – In order to challenge the Honda Accord, Toyota delivered the first two-door coupe version of the Camry for 1994. This model year also brought a passenger side airbag and slightly more horsepower from the V6 engine.

Fourth Generation

  • 1997 – The first model year of the fourth generation continued the trend of growth for this model, stretching out its length more to add additional leg room for rear seat passengers. The new 2.2L four-cylinder engine dished out 133 hp, while the V6 continued to be tuned to increase output to 194 hp. In terms of design, the Camry became more angular and aerodynamic than ever.
  • 2001 – By the end of the fourth generation, the Camry had stepped up its game in terms of creature comforts, too, with a standard stereo system and CD player as well as available features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, chrome accents, and wood-like trim.

Fifth Generation

  • 2002 – Released in September 2001, the 2002 Toyota Camry was even bigger and better than before. The Camry continued to grow in sophistication with more premium materials both inside and out, an improvement in ride quality, and reduced cabin volume. A new four-cylinder engine made 157 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque.
  • 2004 – By the 2004 model year, the Camry had gotten a big boost in performance, with an available 3.3L V6 engine that was good for 225 hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. There was also a Limited Edition model introduced into the trim lineup, bringing with it an elegant front grille design and the additional visibility of fog lamps.

Sixth Generation

  • 2007 – Introduced at the 2006 North American Auto Show, the sixth generation of the Camry debuted with an available hybrid version, sleeker styling, and an available 3.5L V6 that was good for 268 hp.
  • 2010 – For this model year, traction control came standard throughout the lineup, and the four-cylinder engine increased its power to 169 hp.

Current Generation

  • 2011 – Thanks to decreased body weight, a more aerodynamic design, and low rolling-resistance tires, the newest generation is more fuel-efficient than ever, getting up to an EPA-estimated 35 mpg highway with the traditional gasoline four-cylinder engine.
  • 2017 – Last year’s Camry boasted an abundance of high-tech features, including driver assistance safety features, an advanced Entune™ infotainment system with an available navigation system, and even a wireless smartphone charging station.
  • 2018 – The latest iteration of the Camry underwent an exterior and interior redesign to give it a chiseled, streamlined new look and feel.
