If you’ve been shopping around for a midsize SUV that’s perfect for the whole family, you may have come across the 2019 Toyota Highlander and 2019 Ford Explorer during your research. Both offer features and capabilities that most competitors can’t match. But there are also things that set them apart. Before deciding which vehicle will end up on your driveway, compare the performance and safety features of the 2019 Toyota Highlander vs. 2019 Ford Explorer.

Explorer vs. Highlander: Performance

When comparing vehicles, North Miami car shoppers will always look at performance. With that, the new Toyota Highlander brings more to the table.

  • Each Highlander trim level is available with a V6 engine that can provide 295 hp; however, this comes standard on most Highlander models. If you want additional horsepower in the 2019 Explorer, you will need to upgrade to more expensive trims like the Sport or Platinum trim.
  • The Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds when equipped with the V6 engine. The base trim of the Explorer can tow, but you have to upgrade to the Sport or Platinum configuration to compete with the Highlander.
  • Comparing the Highlander V6 to the Ford Explorer base trim level, the Highlander fuel economy puts the Ford to shame. Drivers will get an EPA-estimate 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway**. The Explorer will only get 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway.
  • The 2019 Toyota Highlander is also available as a hybrid, which is more fuel efficient and powerful than other models. The 2019 Ford Explorer does not offer a hybrid model.

Explorer or Highlander: Safety

When comparing vehicles, car shoppers will always consider the needs of their passengers. Comparing the Highlander V6 to the Explorer base configuration, only Toyota offers these standard safety features:

  • Integrated turn signal mirrors
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keeping assist
  • Pre-collision system with automatic emergency braking

You will find some of these features in upgraded Explorer trims, but others are unavailable. What’s more, when you upgrade to higher Highlander models, you can get the Bird’s Eye View Camera. The Explorer doesn’t offer a comparable feature.
